Interim Head of School, David Magill

The ISDenver Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David Magill to the position of Interim Head of School, beginning in January, 2017. David brings a wealth of education and administration experience, including over a decade as the Director of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He has served ISD over the past 18 months as a leadership consultant, and joined the ISD Board of Directors in Fall of 2016 (a position he resigned prior to this appointment). David received a B.S. from Ohio State University in 1970, an Ed.M. in 1973 and an Ed.D. in 1982, both from Temple University.

A native of suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, David Magill is an experienced educational leader who has successfully bridged the differences between public and independent schools.

After graduation from the Ohio State University, David began his career as an elementary and special education teacher with an underserved population in the city of Philadelphia. He completed his Master of Education at Temple University and attained his first administrative position as a building principal and supervisor of special education.

This experience led to his becoming the first Director of Pupil Services in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District while he was completing his Doctor of Education in Leadership and Policy Studies at Temple University.

At the age of 34, he was named Superintendent of Schools in the Wyomissing Area School District, a suburb of Reading, Pennsylvania. It was an ideal opportunity to become fully immersed in a small professional community that expected educational excellence. By the time he completed nine years in Wyomissing, the district was reorganized and the high school had been awarded the national blue ribbon.

His last service in Pennsylvania (11 years) was as the Superintendent in the Lower Merion School District, a high achieving district with 10 schools and nearly 7000 students. National and state recognition continues to be bestowed on Lower Merion for its well-rounded program. The first strategic plan under David’s direction included the adoption of Foreign Language in Elementary Schools and an IB Diploma Programme available to all high school students.

During his time in Lower Merion, David served on the board of directors of the Educational Records Bureau (ERB), the most widely used admission and achievement testing in the independent school world. It was in this capacity, when he became interested in changing his career direction. In 2003, he was selected to become the Director of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. David recently completed his second term on the ERB board and was its Chair for the past seven years.

The Laboratory Schools are among the largest independent schools in the country with nearly 2000 students beginning at age 3 and extending through high school. Its connection and alliance with the University of Chicago provide an unparalleled educational opportunity for its students. In 2014, David retired after successfully completing a $192 million dollar capital campaign that included an Early Childhood Education Center, a building designed exclusively for the arts, and adding 615,000 sq. ft. of renovated and new space for the educational program. With the help of the University, over $120 million dollars was raised through gifts from alumni and parents. During his last year at Lab, the Schools were admitted into the membership of the Council of International Schools.

Since “retiring”, David has consulted with several schools in Chicago including an innovative charter school where he now occupies a position on its Board. His connection with ISD began in 2015, when he assisted the ISD Board with a management audit.

David and his wife, Judy, have three daughters and seven grandchildren. One of his daughters lives nearby in Washington Park and one lives in Parker, Colorado. He enjoys, golf, reading for pleasure, cheering for the Chicago Cubs and Ohio State Buckeyes, and hiking through the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona.
