Artfully connected: A Kindergarten handbook that welcomes families into the learning journey

At the International School of Denver, we believe technology should do more than digitize, it should deepen learning and strengthen human connection. Whether it’s enhancing curriculum, empowering educators, or bringing families closer to the classroom experience, our approach to EdTech is always intentional and people-centered.

Ms. Tracy Chang, our beloved Early Childhood Art teacher, embodies this philosophy beautifully. In her Kindergarten (K3) classroom, Ms. Tracy has leveraged technology not just to inform, but to inspire, creating a vibrant, visually engaging parent and community handbook using Canva, a digital design platform known for its user-friendly interface and creative flexibility. But this wasn’t just a handbook, see for yourself,  it was truly a work of art.

Instead of a traditional, text-heavy document, Ms. Tracy designed a visually engaging guide that introduces families to the art curriculum, showcases classroom routines, and provides key contact information all in one beautifully organized resource.

Her project is a powerful example of how thoughtful tech use can bridge the gap between school and home, turning information into invitation and curriculum into connection.

Where Art Means Innovation

Ms. Tracy’s handbook illustrates how digital tools can elevate communication and foster a sense of belonging:

  • Communication: Sharing classroom information in a clear, visually appealing format
  • Creativity: Transforming a simple document into an engaging, branded resource
  • Organization: Consolidating key details in one easy-to-access location
  • Community Building: Helping new families feel welcomed, informed, and connected

My goal in creating this handbook was to give families a welcoming, visually engaging guide that goes beyond logistics and helps them feel connected to our classroom community from the very beginning. I wanted parents to see not only what their children will be learning, but also the joy and creativity at the heart of our art curriculum. The design was inspired by my belief that learning should feel like an invitation—colorful, organized, and accessible—so families feel both informed and inspired. By blending artful visuals with clear communication, my hope is that this handbook serves as a bridge between home and school, nurturing a sense of belonging and partnership in their child’s learning journey.

-Tracy Chang

Ms. Tracy worked closely with Steven Lamb, ISDenver’s Education Technology Specialist, to bring this vision to life. Their partnership is a model of how thoughtful tech integration can support educators and enhance the student experience.

The true power of a tool like Canva lies not just in its user-friendly design capabilities, but in how it empowers educators. When teachers lead technology projects, they're not just introducing a new app—they're modeling a growth mindset and creating resources that are deeply aligned with the school's mission. A handbook created by teachers, for the community, using a tool like Canva, is a tangible example of ISDenver’s commitment to leveraging EdTech to foster an international mindset, showcasing that our values are lived out in the way we teach and collaborate.

Why It Matters

At ISDenver, we believe technology should serve a purpose and that purpose is always human. Whether it’s helping a parent feel more connected to their child’s classroom or giving a teacher the tools to express their curriculum creatively, tech is most powerful when it brings people together.

Thank you, Ms. Tracy, for showing us how art, technology, and community can come together to create something truly meaningful.
