Students dare to dream big in G8 Capstone
The G8 Capstone is one of the incredible ways ISDenver students demonstrate who they are both as academics and as global citizens.
What is the Capstone?
The Capstone is a culminating project of skills that students have been consolidating at ISDenver. This project asks students the question, "How will you make your mark as a global citizen?" Students answer this question using content from Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, and Language Acquisition. The goal is for students to see themselves as active citizens who can, in fact, make real change.
In each class, students focus on building important skill sets to bring their work into focus:
-
Language and Literature - Using analytical skills - students read a memoir to further understand how change makers can create bigger impact on society.
-
Individuals and Societies - Using research skills students investigate pivotal court cases that have laid the groundwork for systemic change.
-
Language Acquisition - Students use their language skills to further investigate how their project can make an impact on an international level. Advanced language learners have the opportunity to earn their bilingual certificate.
8th Grade Capstone Symposium
We launch into the Capstone project each year with Symposium.
It was the brainchild a few colleagues and I imagined into being last spring. The symposium prompts students to tap into their learning experience at ISDenver, combining their language, intercultural skills, global experiences, and subject knowledge to create a culminating project that reflects who they are and what they care about.
Katie Williams, Incoming Middle School Director
The Symposium gathers a talented group of panelists to help students start considering how they’ll make their mark. Panelists include a wide range of skill sets and backgrounds from do-gooders and movers-and-shakers doing incredible work to make their own mark as global citizens. This year’s panel included:
-
Chief Strategy Officer in the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade
-
Community and Campaign Organizing with concentration on Health Care Policy at the Colorado state level
-
Peace Corps
-
Founders and executive directors of multiple nonprofits
-
Lawyer
Then, the fun work begins. Students are challenged to dream big in their culminating project of their ISDenver experience.
We push them to go beyond the barriers of age, finances, and resources and truly embody global citizenship. Students work on projects as truly unique as they are. We want them to combine their strengths, skills, talents, passions, and interests to answer the question “How will you make your mark as a global citizen?”
Lauren Cantor, MYP Coordinator
Students will be present their projects on May 23rd from 2:30 - 3:30 at our end-of-year celebration, Viva El Dragón.
