Mountains, Music, and Memories: 7th Grade’s Adventure in Staunton State Park

At the International School of Denver, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Rooted in the International Baccalaureate’s inquiry-based philosophy and our own commitment to “classrooms without walls”, our students are encouraged to cultivate curiosity, wonder, and connection with the world around them. With the grand Rocky Mountains right in our backyard, opportunities for exploration and discovery are never far away.

This fall, our 7th-grade students embodied this spirit during a memorable visit to Staunton State Park. Partnering with the Colorado Mountain Club, they set out on a hike that was as much about teamwork and leadership as it was about enjoying Colorado’s natural beauty.

Throughout the day, students took turns leading the group, supporting one another, and reflecting on what it means to be part of a team. They discovered that leadership can look like encouragement, patience, and empathy and that every step on the trail offers a chance to grow together.

The adventure concluded with an impromptu concert as students lifted their voices in song, echoing through the trees and mountains. It was a moment of pure joy, laughter, music, and connection woven into the fabric of a perfect Colorado day.

Experiences like these are more than just field trips; they are bonding and character-building moments that stay with our students long after they return to campus. When ISDenver students reflect on their favorite memories, days like this one at Staunton State Park often top the list, reminders that the best learning happens when we leave space for the unexpected, allow wonder to seep in, and walk together, step by step, as friends.
