What is transdisciplinary learning and how does it come to life in Early Childhood?
Transdisciplinary learning in our Early Childhood Building. A Case Study.
As a Primary Years Programme International Baccaluearate School, you might occasionally hear us use some fancy words. Like transdisciplinary learning. But what does that really mean and what does that look like in Early Childhood?
First, transdisciplinary. In case you are new to the IB, this is a biggie. In a nutshell, it is the ability to learn outside of a silo! In IB's terms it is, "providing children with authentic learning experiences that are not confined to the boundaries of traditional subjects. Although subjects play an important role in learning, PYP learners explore real-world problems by going beyond subject boundaries."
For this to work, there has to be some pretty cool teacher collaboration. I wanted to give you a recent example of one such collab between our Kindergarten (K3) Art and Chinese teachers.
- It started with the lesson of exploring story structure.
- Then, students concepted a story with a beginning, middle, and end in Art and drew their stories digitally.
- Next, they recorded the story in the animation in Chinese back in their homeroom.
5-year-olds. In Chinese. So impressive. (I don't know if I even created anything worthy of hanging on the fridge in Kindergarten!) Joking aside, this is the type of work are students are engaged in every day. Come see it for yourself! Schedule a tour in the Admissions Portal!
