What is "fit" all about?

What is "fit" all about?

At a mission-driven school like ISDenver, "fit" is really important. Here is what it means to me.

(Don't worry - this photos was taken last year. This year, we are all in masks on campus!)

What is "fit" all about?

Well, what IS “fit” all about? Fit is arguably the most important criteria for admission at the International School of Denver.

To better understand fit, let’s go back in time to last Saturday morning. It is a bright October day, the hues of autumn shining through the leaves in the morning sun. The slow and sleepy pace of Denver on a Saturday morning suits me as I leisurely make my way from my Westside home to Lowry to teach my yoga class.

A very familiar horizontal bumper sticker on the car in front of me comes into view as I pull up to a light along Speer Boulevard. I always love seeing our families out and about, and knowing one of our ISDenver families was in front of me that day just felt like a little gift.

When the light changed from red to green, the car stayed put. It took me a moment to understand why. At this particular intersection of the city along the Cherry Creek trail, a man has taken up residence for the last few years. Maybe you know the one.

What I saw next gave me all the feels. The ISDenver family had paused to share a “blessing bag” with the man. Blessing bags usually have hygiene items and some food - but more importantly are a way to tell our homeless neighbors, “I see you! You matter.”

In that moment, this family encapsulated everything fit is about. It is doing the right thing, even when you don’t think anyone is watching. In a mission-driven school like ours, that is so important. And I would argue it is more important now than ever.

It is such a hard and crazy and uncertain time. Doing what is right when no one is watching means:

  •  A group of parents starting a “Pay it forward fund” to help families impacted by the pandemic stay at ISDenver.
  • Taking all the right precautions to not only keep your family safe, but to keep the entire ISDenver community safe. (This is the 13th week we’ve been reopened without a single positive COVID-19 case.)
  • Seeing and meeting a need, like the car did in front of me last Saturday morning, to do what our mission statement reads, “make positive contributions in a complex world.”

As a prospective parent, you want a school in alignment with your family’s values. And that is exactly what we are looking for in our families, too. In fact, it is so important to us, our community  agrees to live by these “We” statements:

  • We respect ourselves and treat others with dignity.
  • We are principled and open-minded.
  • We positively contribute to our community.

My colleague, Katrina, and I would love to meet you and learn what is important to your family. Email us any time!
