Visual & Performing Arts
Instruction in fine arts is one of the hallmarks of a ISD education. Instruction in art and music are delivered in English, and reflect a wide variety of genres, periods and world cultures.
Students are encouraged to express themselves and hone their artistic skills by experimenting with color, style and media. They are introduced to classic and contemporary artists inside and outside the classroom: field trips to local art exhibits are always a student favorite. In addition to a designated, weekly art period, most ISD teachers regularly incorporate art projects into their lesson plans.
Our students connect with the world – and each other — through music. Weekly classes and field trips to local performances introduce musical styles, instruments and classic and contemporary composers from all over the globe. Students learn favorite children’s songs from other countries and stage concerts and performances throughout the school year.
In drama, students learn the fundamentals of theater — the elements of nonverbal performance, components of design and vocabulary. Students refine their communication and public-speaking skills.
