Grade 4 Unit of Inquiry Spotlight: Learning About Ourselves Through Science, Collaboration, and Creativity

Grade 4 Unit of Inquiry Spotlight: Learning About Ourselves Through Science, Collaboration, and Creativity

In Upper Primary at ISDenver, our classrooms become laboratories and think tanks. Our classrooms are dynamic places where students learn to ask bold questions, uncover causes and relationships, and push their curiosity beyond the surface. As students inquire, experiment, and reflect, they also synthesize their learning into impressive demonstrations of conceptual understanding.

This year’s Who We Are unit in Grade 4 was a powerful example of how inquiry comes alive at ISDenver.

Exploring what it means to be well

Our first PYP unit invited students to investigate one of the most fascinating subjects: themselves. Through the central idea of maintaining a balanced mind and body, students explored how physical, emotional, and mental well-being are interconnected. Their curiosity led them into the world of human body systems (circulatory, respiratory, nervous, digestive, and more), discovering how these systems function and, more importantly, how they work together to support everyday life.

Learning in a community of thinkers

Learning unfolded through engaging rotations with all Grade 4 teachers. Students collaborated in mixed groups, building new relationships and strengthening their ability to communicate and think critically. They asked thoughtful questions, shared wonderings, and made connections across disciplines from science to language to social-emotional learning.

We were also fortunate to welcome guest experts, who enriched the inquiry by offering real-world perspectives. Their stories and expertise inspired our young learners to think like scientists, doctors, and wellness advocates, deepening students’ understanding of the human body and the choices that keep it healthy.

Purposeful technology, meaningful creation

One of the most exciting outcomes of the unit was the culminating project. Students researched, scripted, and produced their very own podcast episodes, collectively titled The Human Body Series. Students used technology purposefully, a hallmark of our ed-tech philosophy at ISDenver, to demonstrate their understanding.

In these podcasts, students explained how specific body systems function and how they interact to maintain balance. The recordings highlight not only their scientific understanding but also their creativity, communication skills, and confidence with digital tools.

A celebration of inquiry and growth

The Who We Are unit gave Grade 4 students the chance to understand themselves more deeply while practicing the habits of lifelong learners: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and curiosity. Their podcasts stand as a testament to the power of inquiry-based learning and to the thoughtful integration of technology across our curriculum.

At ISDenver, learning is never about memorizing facts. It’s about discovering connections, asking better questions, and making meaning. Our Grade 4 learners rose to that challenge beautifully.

I would love to show you an Upper Primary classroom in action!

Join us for our next Open House on Thursday, December 4 at 9:00. RSVP here.
