Creating a community where every child feels seen, valued, and connected is foundational to our mission of developing curious, compassionate global citizens. In our Primary School, this work is led with intention by our counseling team, who partner closely with teachers, students, and families to nurture the social‑emotional skills children need to thrive.

This year, our counselors, Laura Fletcher and Annie Barocas, have been guiding students through meaningful experiences that strengthen empathy, gratitude, and connection. Here’s a glimpse into what that looks like in Grades 4 and 5.

Building Gratitude and Belonging in Grade 4

In Grade 4, our recent MindUp lessons have focused on the powerful relationship between mindfulness and gratitude. When students learn to pause, notice, and reflect, they become more aware of the people and moments that bring meaning to their day. And when they express that gratitude, something remarkable happens: it grows.

 We often tell students that gratitude is a lot like kindness. The more you share it, the more it expands.

To deepen this practice, Grade 4 recently launched the GiveThx program, a digital platform designed to strengthen connection and belonging through short, intentional notes of appreciation. Before introducing the tool, students explored:

• What gratitude feels like in the body
• Why expressing appreciation matters
• Who they feel grateful for in their lives
• How to communicate gratitude in a meaningful way

We’ve already seen the impact of GiveThx with our staff and Grade 5 students, and we’re excited to bring this practice to Grade 4. As students begin sending notes to classmates and teachers, we anticipate a ripple effect, one that reinforces empathy, strengthens relationships, and builds a classroom culture where every child feels valued.

Building a Culture of Belonging in Grade 5

In Grade 5, belonging has taken center stage through a series of intentional lunch groups focused on Inclusivity and Belonging. These sessions have sparked thoughtful, honest conversations about what it means to feel welcomed—and how we can create that feeling for others.

Students reflected on moments when they felt truly included, identifying the social cues, environments, and behaviors that helped them feel connected. They also explored a nuanced social challenge:

How can we be inclusive while still honoring the need for close friendships?

This balance is a key part of developing emotional intelligence. By naming these dynamics openly, students gain tools to navigate friendships with empathy and confidence.

These conversations are prepared students for the GiveThx practice. Grade 5 learners will be encouraged to express gratitude to someone who has made them feel seen, heard, or included. A powerful way to reinforce the belonging they are actively building.

Our counselors play a vital role in this process. Their work helps students understand themselves, care for one another, and contribute to a community where every child feels they belong.

This is the heart of global citizenship. When students learn to recognize emotions, practice gratitude, and build inclusive communities, they develop the skills they will carry into every classroom, friendship, and future endeavor.
