Learning Comes Alive Beyond the K1 Classroom

Learning Comes Alive Beyond the K1 Classroom

At the International School of Denver, even our three‑year‑olds experience learning the way the International Baccalaureate intends: through inquiry, exploration, and meaningful connections to the world around them.

That philosophy came alive beautifully during a recent K1 inquiry visit to The Urban Farm, where our youngest learners spent the day learning al fresco with muddy boots and wide eyes!

Real‑World Learning Starts Early

We believe that children learn best when classroom concepts are connected to real experiences. This trip complemented a unit on living and non‑living things and offered a sensory‑rich environment where curiosity could run free.

Here’s how the IB came to life on the farm:

  • Animal Interaction. Our students showed bravery and curiosity as they touched, fed, and observed farm animals up close. I have to be honest, these moments were super cute. But, more than that, they were opportunities to practice observation, communication, and care, all core IB Learner Profile traits.
  • Farm to Table Connections. Children learned that animals play different roles in our lives. Some cows provide milk; others provide meat. These simple, age‑appropriate conversations help students understand systems, resources, and where our food comes from a foundational global‑citizenship concept.
  • Life Cycles in Action. Watching hens lay eggs was a “cracking” introduction to biology. Instead of reading about life cycles, students witnessed them, an unforgettable anchor for future scientific learning. And this real-life learning on the farm was brought to the class, and students are now being scientists observing the plants and the butterfly cycles.
  • Resources & Material. From sheep to sweaters, students explored how natural materials become everyday objects. This hands‑on discovery helps children understand cause and effect, production, and human use of natural resources.

A Day of Wonder

The Urban Farm gave our K1 learners a full day of discovery. It was filled with sensory exploration, new vocabulary, muddy hands, and countless “Aha!” moments.

And if you’re curious how our immersion + IB model nurtures confident, globally minded learners from the very start, we’d love to show you.
