Students Purchase Art for ISDenver

Students Purchase Art for ISDenver

ISDenver students Kira Cattand, Nora Assougdam and Jacqueline Douglas, along with Arts Coordinator/Visual Arts Teacher Risa "Ms.Mac" Machovec, attended the Cherry Creek Arts Festival last Saturday to purchase art for ISDenver through the Janus Student Art Buying Program. ISDenver as well as our PTO generously granted $2,000 for this project, along with a contribution of $500 from Janus.

After a selective application process at school, our 3 students surveyed the ISDenver community for feedback on the types of art they wanted to see on campus, and sought out these kinds of pieces at the festival. "The students and I had so much fun meeting the artists and learning new ways to create!" said Ms. Mac. They purchased art for four buildings on campus - the Welcome Center, Lower School, Upper School, and Kimak. They also commissioned 2 pieces, including a kinetic spinning wood sculpture which will be ready in August. They will also meet with an artist to create a mixed media piece with electricity in August.

After making their purchases, the students joined 24 other schools at the Janus Student Showcase tent, where they display the pieces in a gallery-type setting. Festival-goers visited the gallery and spoke with our students about what they learned and purchased. In addition, an art review panel assembled from professionals within the Festival community visited with our students to discuss their pieces and ask questions.

Additionally, ISDenver was chosen as 1 of 3 schools to purchase art for the Mobile Gallery, which will travel and display art throughout Colorado. 8th grade student, Kira Cattand shared about the art purchased for this on stage at this showcase as well.

Thank you to our students and Ms.Mac for taking on this initiative! We look forward to sharing the art with our community in the fall.
