Global Explorers Passport to Brazil: Where Language Meets Culture in a Joyful Summer Adventure

Global Explorers Passport to Brazil: Where Language Meets Culture in a Joyful Summer Adventure

This summer, ISDenver campers took an exciting journey to South America without ever leaving Denver thanks to our Global Explorers: Passport to Brazil camp! As part of our beloved international summer series, children immersed themselves in the colors, rhythms, and traditions of Brazil, the largest and one of the most culturally rich countries on the continent.

From the lush greenery of the Amazon rainforest to the dynamic cityscape of Rio de Janeiro, campers explored Brazil through hands-on experiences that brought the country’s vibrant spirit to life. Whether they were experiencing capoeira, cooking pão de queijo,  or learning Portuguese phrases, every day was a celebration of discovery.

A Bilingual Experience Led by a Native Voice

The camp was uniquely guided by our very own Marketing and Communications Manager, Jaqueline Souza, a proud native of Brazil whose creativity and passion made the experience truly special. Taught in both Portuguese and English, the camp welcomed children of all language levels and backgrounds, inviting them to not only learn about Brazil but to connect with its culture through engaging, accessible programming.

I was glad for the opportunity of sharing my roots with our campers, it was truly amazing to realize how kids are open-minded and curious. I am pleased to continue inspiring them to learn more about the world and reinforce that we are allowed to celebrate each other. When I came to the US, I was a bit apprehensive as an immigrant. How would the receptivity be? At ISDenver, I found a diverse and highly supportive community for me and my son. Even my husband volunteered to come to the camp and teach the kids how to play Futebol de botão (button soccer). Passport to Brazil was a nice taste of the ISDenver experience.

We spoke with Dani Robb, ISDenver's Camp Director, whose vision helped shape this standout experience. Here’s what she shared:

Our Global Explorers: Passport to Brazil camp was a vibrant success, immersing campers in Brazil’s dynamic culture through music, dance, food, and sports. Campers gained new perspectives as they explored everything from the Amazon rainforest to the streets of Rio, all while engaging in activities taught in both English and Portuguese. This unique bilingual experience deepened their appreciation for global diversity and sparked curiosity about the world beyond their own.

A Parent’s Perspective: Myles’ Journey Through Brazil

We also had the chance to hear from a parent whose child, Myles, attended the Passport to Brazil camp. His enthusiasm for the experience was unmistakable. Among the many memorable moments, two stood out: a visit to the Brazilian bakery Padoca and learning the art of capoeira from the United Capoeira Association in Colorado (UCA).

Myles’ enthusiasm for this camp has been so fun to see! From food to culture to games and sports, this camp was truly a cultural learning experience. The field trips and activities were so unique. During the entire week of this camp, Myles came home with facts about Brazil and so much excitement for all he experienced! Curiosity is an important component of the IB curriculum and this camp opened his eyes to so many aspects of Brazilian culture. He even learned a bit of Portuguese, which is more than we could have expected from a weeklong camp!

-ISDenver Parent

The Passport to Brazil camp perfectly embodies the spirit of the Global Explorers series. Through joyful exploration, campers discovered new perspectives, practiced language skills, and built lasting friendships. It’s no wonder this program is growing in impact and popularity!

ISDenver’s mission to develop globally minded, bilingual learners who positively contribute to a complex world shines bright in every corner of these camps. And with leaders like Jaqueline and Dani at the helm, it’s clear that Global Explorers is more than just a summer activity. It’s a portal to the world.

Get ready for next summer’s Global Explorers adventures! Exciting new destinations and even more meaningful cultural connections are on the horizon. We’re building something special that will take campers deeper into the heart of each country and theme they explore.
