ISDenver Featured in Independent School Magazine for Bold Leadership and Vision

The International School of Denver is proud to share that our school was recently highlighted in Independent School, the national magazine of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). The feature article, co‑written by Head of School Roberto d’Erizans, Board Chair Beth Capra, and Former Board Chair Kurt Pletcher, offers a rare, behind‑the‑scenes look at one of the most pivotal decisions in our nearly 50‑year history.

Titled “A Case Study in Navigating Uncertainty,” the article chronicles how ISDenver’s leadership and Board of Directors responded to an unexpected, high‑stakes opportunity: the chance to acquire a nearby campus and expand the school to include a high school. What unfolded was a powerful example of disciplined governance, strategic readiness, and mission‑driven courage.

A Moment That Arrived Sooner Than Expected

For years, ISDenver had been exploring the possibility of adding a high school. But in October 2024, the future arrived early. A nearby parochial high school announced its closure, and its campus, just a short walk from ISDenver, presented a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity.

With only days to act and strict confidentiality requirements in place, the Board and senior leadership team mobilized quickly. As the article describes, trustees convened with no advance materials, aware only that the decision before them was urgent, sensitive, and consequential.

Governance at Its Best

The Independent School feature highlights the extraordinary governance that guided this process. Trustees reorganized their work within days, forming subcommittees focused on philanthropy, finance, and programmatic fit. Senior administrators produced rigorous financial models, market analyses, and operational assessments, allowing the Board to make decisions grounded in data rather than conjecture.

The article notes that this speed was possible because ISDenver had already done the strategic work: scenario planning, mission alignment, and long‑term thinking. When the opportunity appeared, the school was ready.

Courage, Trust, and Community Belief

One of the most striking themes in the article is the role of trust. Because of nondisclosure agreements, trustees could not discuss the potential acquisition with partners, and administrators could not consult faculty. The Board and leadership team relied on strong relationships, clear roles, and disciplined communication to navigate the complexity.

And when the decision was finally announced to the community, the response was extraordinary. Within weeks, families committed nearly $7 million in support, an affirmation of confidence in the school’s mission, leadership, and future.

A Defining Chapter in ISDenver’s Story

The NAIS feature positions ISDenver as a national example of how independent schools can lead boldly in moments of volatility. Rather than retreating in the face of uncertainty, our Board and leadership team chose a path aligned with mission, market need, and long‑term sustainability.

In 2025-26, we welcomed our founding class of 9th graders. This moment stands as a defining chapter in our history, one that reflects the strength of our community and the clarity of our purpose.

We are honored to see our story shared on a national stage and grateful to the authors for capturing the thoughtful, courageous work that brought us to this milestone.
