Outdoor Campus Spaces: To Learn and To Play!
Beautiful outdoor weather is one of the pleasures of living in Colorado, so why not learn outdoors also? Parent Sarah Pletcher initiated the thought, and donations to ISDenver Community Giving made two outdoor learning spaces a reality. Porches connected to ISDenver’s Kimak early childhood/kindergarten building have been converted to inviting and useful spaces for young learners to enjoy. The first porch is an Outdoor Classroom, with cognitive games and a reading nook. The second porch is the Investigation Station, where learners keep busy with sand and water play, natural resources, and an art station.
“These spaces open up so many opportunities for the children to get outside for learning,” said Kyra Gailis, Director of Learning and ECE Principal. “It truly makes learning hands-on, and there are so many age appropriate learning activities,” she added. A bonus: teachers engage more often and have opportunities to connect with students in a unique and more pleasurable setting.
So far, our ECE students love spending class time outside - soaking up the sun and all of their unique learning opportunities! Kudos to our leadership for their vision and efforts in ECE to make this happen - and to all of you for supporting Community Giving!
