Reporting on Learning at ISDenver: Enhancing Assessment for Student Growth

Reporting on Learning at ISDenver: Enhancing Assessment for Student Growth

At ISDenver, our approach to assessment is guided by a commitment to fostering student growth, encouraging self-reflection, and ensuring clear communication among educators, students, and families. The sixth and final part of our assessment framework, Reporting on Learning, plays a crucial role in this process by providing a comprehensive and transparent reflection of student progress. Our reporting system aligns with best practices in international education and supports the continuous development of the whole child.

Purpose of Reporting

5th grade Spanish student presents at the December Celebration of Learning.

Reporting on learning serves multiple purposes at ISDenver:

  • Student Growth: It provides students with meaningful feedback to guide their learning journey and encourages self-directed improvement.
  • Parental Engagement: It ensures parents have a clear understanding of their child's academic and social-emotional development.
  • Teacher Reflection: It supports educators in refining instructional strategies based on student progress and needs.
  • Institutional Alignment: It aligns with ISDenver’s mission to cultivate lifelong learners and global citizens.

Key Components of Reporting

Our reporting structure integrates multiple forms of assessment data to provide a holistic view of student learning. The key components include:

1. Formative and Summative Assessments

Teachers utilize a balanced approach that includes:

  • Formative Assessments: Ongoing checks for understanding, such as observations, reflections, peer feedback, and exit tickets.
  • Summative Assessments: End-of-unit assessments, projects, and presentations that evaluate student mastery of learning objectives.

2. Assessment Platforms: Toddle and ManageBac

ISDenver leverages Toddle for tracking and reporting student progress in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and ManageBac for the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

  • Toddle (PYP):

    • Real-time feedback on student work.
    • Documentation of learning through portfolios, reflections, and rubrics.
    • Seamless communication between teachers, students, and parents.
    • Ongoing formative and summative assessments aligned with IB standards.
  • ManageBac (MYP):

    • Centralized curriculum planning and assessment tracking.
    • Performance analytics for monitoring student progress.
    • Digital portfolios and unit reflections.
    • Communication tool for students, parents, and teachers.

3. Student Self-Reflection and Goal-Setting

To promote student agency, learners engage in self-assessment and goal-setting through:

  • Reflection journals.
  • Student-led conferences (Fall - Spring).
  • Personalized learning plans developed in collaboration with teachers.

4. Parent-Teacher Conferences and Progress Reports

Parents receive updates on student progress through:

  • Biannual Progress Reports: Detailed narratives and performance indicators aligned with IB standards (January, and June )
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences: Dedicated discussions on student achievements, areas for growth, and strategies for support.
  • Student-Led Conferences: Opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning by presenting their progress and goals.

5. Celebrations of Learning

8th grade students present their community projects at the December Celebration of Learning.

Celebrations of Learning are a vital part of the family’s learning experience, as they allow parents to engage with their children in the classroom, surrounded by their learning tools and peers. Students will share their learning experiences, helping their families gain a deeper understanding of their units of inquiry. We are thrilled to host on-campus Celebrations of Learning twice this year.

The comprehensive assessment practices at ISDenver are built upon four key quadrants:

  1. Formative and summative assessments,
  2. Student self-reflection and goal-setting,
  3. Parent-teacher collaboration, and
  4. Celebrations of learning.

By seamlessly integrating these elements, we ensure a well-rounded approach to student growth that values both academic achievement and personal development. Through Toddle and ManageBac, we provide real-time feedback, encourage meaningful student-led discussions, and maintain a strong partnership between home and school. As John Hattie states, 'The most powerful single influence enhancing achievement is feedback.' At ISDenver, our assessment framework embodies this philosophy, creating a dynamic learning environment that empowers students to take ownership of their education while fostering a culture of continuous growth.

Reporting on Learning at ISDenver is a dynamic process designed to support students in reaching their full potential. By fostering clear communication, integrating student voice, and leveraging data-informed insights, our reporting framework upholds our commitment to academic excellence, personal growth, and global citizenship. As we continue to evolve our practices, we remain dedicated to making assessment a meaningful and empowering experience for all members of our learning community.
