Student Agency in Action: ISDenver’s Approach to Early Childhood Learning Takes Center Stage

Christele Turner, Christine Mine-Seminara, Martha Diaz De León, and Maria Rodriguez at the Early Childhood Rocky Mountain Conference on March 6

At the Early Childhood Rocky Mountain Conference, on March 6th, Christele Turner, Christine Mine-Seminara, Martha Diaz De León, and Maria Rodriguez from the International School of Denver (ISDenver) presented "Nurturing Student Agency: A Holistic Approach at ISDenver." This session showcased the critical role of agency in early childhood education and how ISDenver fosters student agency through its International Baccalaureate (IB) and Reggio Emilia framework.

Emphasizing Student Voice and Choice

The presentation emphasized ISDenver's integration of the IB framework and Reggio Emilia approach, which promotes student voice and choice as essential components of the learning experience. By encouraging children to take ownership of their learning, ISDenver allows them to explore their interests and develop a sense of agency. This student-centered approach aligns with the belief that children are capable, competent learners and actual citizens of the world.

Brain Research and Agency

The ISDenver ECE team presented the effects of developing social-emotional skills at a young age, the effects it has on the brain, as well as the long-term effects when learning. The ECE team intentionally creates environments that promote self-directed learning. By proactively teaching social-emotional skills and providing opportunities for children to solve problems, make choices, and engage in projects, the school helps children build confidence in their abilities and reinforce their sense of agency

Real-World Applications: Student Agency in Action

A central part of the presentation was dedicated to sharing real-life examples of how ISDenver integrates student agency into daily practice. The team presented several examples from the school’s classrooms and beyond.

Interactive Discussion and Reflection

In the final part of the presentation, the ECE team led an interactive discussion with conference participants, inviting them to reflect on how they bring agency into their own educational practices. This open dialogue allowed educators to exchange ideas and share strategies for fostering student independence in their classrooms. Attendees walked away with practical insights on how to implement similar approaches in their own settings, creating more empowered, independent learners.

Empowering the Next Generation of Learners

The Nurturing Student Agency presentation at the Early Childhood Rocky Mountain Conference was a great success. The ISDenver ECE team expertly connected the research behind agency with the tangible, everyday practices that are helping students thrive at the school.

This session not only showcased the success of ISDenver’s approach but also inspired educators to reflect on how they can further empower their students to take ownership of their learning and become active contributors to their communities.

When children have the opportunity to practice agency, they not only become more engaged learners but also develop the skills and confidence necessary to navigate the world around them.
